Generative Jewelry

Using generative design to explore an antique motif. 2024

I spent a lot of time in antique stores as a kid. My interest in product design and its evolution started somewhere there, where I learned about the precursors to modern materials and manufacturing from long outdated tools. Observing these old objects, I became interested in how innovations can redefine both the products we create and the needs they fulfill.

However, I also coveted Victorian jewelry—sentimental objects with little need for progress and exempt from utility. The Victorians loved a good symbol, and one that comes up repeatedly is the star: often in the form of a brooch, frequently set with seed pearls. Drawing inspiration from the many variations of these star motifs, I used them as a study in parametric design, developing a Grasshopper script to explore them in a modern context.
